Dear all,

The next MANCEPT research seminar will be on Thursday 4 February, when our very own Liam Shields will present on “The Importance of Being Parents”. The seminar starts at 4pm in the Arthur Lewis Building 2nd floor boardroom. (This is where all seminars will be held for the rest of semester.)

The presentation of the paper will be followed by a question and answer session that will finish at around 5.30pm. We will go for a drink afterwards and then dinner at Urban Cookhouse. If you’d like to come to dinner, please let me know before noon on Wednesday 3 February. An abstract for the talk is below, along with the speaker schedule for this semester. Best, Steph

ABSTRACT: There are two types of view that we might use to evaluate the content and distribution of child-rearing rights, also known as custodial rights. One is the child-centered view, which focuses exclusively on the interests of the child, and the other is the dual-interest view, which focuses both on the interests of the child and the parents. A key motivation for the dual-interest view is that it seems able to explain three powerful convictions regarding the distribution of child-rearing rights that the child-centered view cannot. In this paper I argue that currently advocated dual-interest views cannot explain all three convictions (they only explain one, and the least important one at that) and that it looks unlikely that any dual-interest view could explain all of these convictions because some can only be explained at the expense of others. In light of this, those drawn to the dual-interest view (like me) must consider how best to proceed and, in particular, which of the convictions to accept and which to reject.
