DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the centenary of the 1917 Revolution\, the event
promises to explore the contemporary pertinence of the idea of revolutio
n in Southern and Eastern Europe. Moving beyond questions of radical tra
nsformation and irreversible political change\, the concept of ‘everyday
revolutions’ problematizes the overlooked revolutionary potential of sm
 all-scale resistance\, grassroots mobilisation\, counter-culture\, liber
 ation movements\, and alternative provisioning\, among others.\n\nThese
phenomena direct attention to the challenges faced by the ‘edges of Euro
pe’. From deindustrialization to corruption\, and from to authoritariani
sm to welfare retraction\, the Southern and Eastern peripheries of the E
uropean project are currently troubled by profound social\, economic\, a
nd political challenges. The diverse manners by which actors signify\, c
ope with\, and react against these everyday struggles are revealing. Peo
ple’s struggles for wellbeing\, equality\, and dignity materialise in id
 eological critique\, intimate investment\, and tenacious action.\n\nEnga
ging a wide range of social causes\, the multivalent concept of ‘everyda
y revolution’ materializes in sight\, sound\, and movement. It manifests
in struggles against homelessness and deprivation\, and combats nationa
lism and xenophobia. It finds expression in music\, literature\, and fil
 m. It resonates in civic engagement\, youth culture\, and pastime. Final
 ly\, it realizes in remembrance\, imagination\, and desire.\n\nThis even
t will feature conventional academic papers\, discussions\, films and in
teractive workshops for adults and children.\n\nThe event will be enrich
ed by keynote lecture by Professor Davina Cooper\, author of recently pu
blished ‘Everyday Utopias’\, who will speak on 'What good is playing at
being a state?' on Friday 19 May at 4pm at the Whitworth Art Gallery.\n\
n \n\nThis event has been generously co-supported by the Whitworth Art G
allery\, The Sociological Review Foundation\, British Association for Sl
avic an East European Studies\, Artsmethods@Manchester and Manchester Je
 an Monet Centre for Excellence.
