About the event:

Abstract: Changing people's behaviour is central to improving society through better public health. However, many large scale attempts to change people's behaviour have been characterised by intuitive ideas about how to change people's behaviour, suboptimal research designs and poor evaluations. This talk will focus on my research, which is geared towards identifying the active ingredients of psychological interventions across a range of behavioural domains. Underpinning these brief interventions is a theory that distinguishes between motivational and volitional influences on behaviour change, and which explains why behaviour change is rarely as straightforward as is commonly assumed.

Professor Christopher J Armitage - Biography: Professor Christopher J. Armitage is a Health Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and a Professor of Health Psychology in the Manchester Centre for Health Psychology in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on psychological intervention and behaviour change, which uses psychological theory (e.g., Rubicon model, transtheoretical model) to develop tools for behaviour change (e.g., alcohol consumption, dietary intake) among diverse populations (e.g., children and adolescents, opiate users). He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles on these topics and has received funding to support this research from the Technology Strategy Board, British Renal Society, AERC, ESRC, MRC, and NICE.
