Join Fourfold Productions for an evening showcasing two shows by Rosa
Gatley — birthday girl (dir. Rosa Gatley) and SOFAR (dir. Maisie Holland).
Both shows are fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, taking one last
voyage in the John Thaw.
‘a complex gem of new writing’
‘pithy, fresh & sincere’
birthday girl:
this is a play about birthdays. it's also about growing up, the future and the inevitability of ageing - a prospect that you are finding increasingly unnerving.
birthday girl is about getting older and being completely terrified to do so. for the 45 minutes leading up to her 20th birthday, we see inside the head of the otherwise unnamed birthday girl, mixing together anecdotes of birthdays past - the epic house party of your 17th, the trip to a&e on your 8th, the mass sleepover of your 15th - and now, your 20th. turn up the abba and put on a party hat because it’s time to age up!
SOFAR:
alma is a whale specialist on her final field mission before being forced into an early retirement.
accompanied by sadie, a younger marine biologist fresh out of college and recovering from her first heartbreak, they pursue the famously crippled whale, luna, on her final journey across the pacific ocean to her birthplace. luna is emaciated and exhausted, dragging herself forward using only her pectoral fins, an epic feat of strength and determination.
alma and sadie are tasked with tracking her until the very end, hoping that she really will make it home one last time, as alma contends with the progression of the life-altering degenerative condition threatening to throw off the course of her life completely.
'SOFAR' is about endings and last times. it is also about all the beginnings we sometimes forget to notice, and appreciating all the time we really do have left.’
