Rethinking Masculinity, Nation, and Sport
Few contexts of modern life showcase masculinity and nation more dramatically than professional sport. The workings of nationalism through sport, however, pose questions about received ideas on the role that gender plays in these dynamics. In a number of the ethnographic contexts in which members of the GLOBALSPORT ERC project have conducted fieldwork, the nation is constructed by who owns sport as much as by those who are excluded from it, but it also emerges in unstable fashion from competing processes of marginalization.
