SUMMARY:Portrait of a Living Archive

DESCRIPTION:When people think about libraries they tend to think of them
as the ancestral home of written rather than visual culture. The John Ry
lands Library houses a significant collection of art\, from various cult
ures and a range of historical periods.\n\nSimilarly\, when people think
of a specialist library like the Rylands they are often unaware that ou
r collections are constantly growing with new acquisitions and that thes
e teem with the life of the living alongside the venerable dead. Contemp
 orary poets\, novelists\, artists\, translators\, book-binders and print
ers appear in our collections and one way to connect with them is throug
h the medium of photographic portraiture.\n\nOver the past year\, the li
brary's photographers\, Jamie Robinson and Gwen Jones\, have made a seri
es of portraits that bring us face to face with some of the people who a
ppear in our collections. In turn\, these photographs will become part o
f the Library's collection of images\, adding depth to our knowledge of
the people represented in the archive whilst enriching our collection of
  photography.\n\nOpens 6pm\, Thursday\, 3 October
