About the event:
The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences Graduate School and Graduate Society are delighted to announce the second annual Postgraduate Research (PGR) Showcase event. Open to all postgraduates and academics, the Showcase provides an opportunity to:
- Learn more about the outstanding research being conducted by PGR students across our Schools and Institutes.
- Share ideas and good practice concerning your approach to research, methods, techniques and presenting.
- Peer review presentations and develop key assessment skills.
- Meet Postgraduate Research Directors, Tutors and Trainers from across the Faculty to gain advice ahead of presenting your research externally.
- Discuss career options beyond your PGR degree with our external sponsors, representing various scientific and healthcare sectors.
The event will feature a presentation from each School and Institute aimed at demonstrating the breadth of postgraduate research being conducted across the Faculty. Regular coffee breaks will allow opportunity to meet fellow students during poster presentations.
Our guest speaker is Dr. David Kirby. Dr. Kirby is a senior lecturer in science communication studies at the University of Manchester in the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. Many of Dr. Kirby’s publications examine the relationship between cinema, genetics, and biotechnology. Furthermore Dr. Kirby has also explored the collaboration between scientists and the entertainment industry, which was discussed in his book entitled, Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists and Cinema published by MIT Press. His book has received positive reviews in over 20 newspapers, magazines and journals such as Nature, Science, Film Comment, Time Literary Supplement, and BBC Focus Magazine. Currently Dr. Kirby is exploring the role of forensic science in televisual storytelling.
Our sponsors include Johnson & Johnson, Eurogentec, Primer Design, Bioline, BMG Labtech Ltd, New England Biolabs, Scientific Laboratory Supplies, Cambridge Bioscience, Stratech, Eppendorf, and Anachem.
Whether you are in the early stages of your research degree, or due to shortly make the leap into your first postdoctoral position, the Showcase promises to be an invaluable day.
