DESCRIPTION:This event is co-hosted by the Sexuality summer School and CI
DRAL.\n\nScott Herring (James H. Rudy Professor of English\, Indiana Uni
versity)\, will deliver a public lecture entitled 'Senior Living with Ch
arles Henri Ford'.\n\nThis presentation traces understudied lineages of
queer American modernism by focusing on the late life of Charles Henri F
ord as he took up residence in New York City’s Dakota apartment building
from the mid-1970s to his death in 2002. Most famous for his co-author
ed experimental novel The Young and Evil (1933)\, Ford also composed num
erous surrealist pieces during the 1990s under the aid of his caretaker
Indra Tamang. Focusing on their cross-generational two-person avant-gar
de\, Herring asks what queer longing might look like when filtered throu
gh queer longinquity—the “long passage of time” according to the Oxford
English Dictionary? His extensive review of Ford’s collaborative archiv
es attests that this elderly modernist’s age-old reply was to initiate a
radical experiment in LGBT senior living.
