DESCRIPTION:This one-day symposium will be a significant opportunity to e
 xamine the historical development of higher and further education\, its 
 geographical expansion\, architectural expression and wider socio-econom
 ic relations to the city and region\, in the past and up to the present.
 \n\nThe focus will be on the interactions between place\, planning and a
 rchitectural design to create effective environments for teaching and ac
 ademic research\; understanding how the social and spatial structure of 
 these major institutions of learning changed over different periods driv
 en in part by local needs and initiatives as well as national policies a
 round higher education.\n\nThe symposium will be interdisciplinary and w
 e welcome speakers and attendees from history\, geography\, town plannin
 g\, architecture\, history of science\, education\, and allied disciplin
 es who can speak to different time periods\, theoretical positions and e
 mpirics of particular institutional histories.\n\nThere is no charge for
  the Symposium and lunch will be provided. Please register using the lin
 k at the top of the page.\n\nCall for Papers: We welcome contributions o
 n the histories and varied development of universities and institutions 
 of higher education across the Manchester and Salford region.\nTalks can
  focus on the universities (MMU\,Salford\,University of Manchester)\; UM
 IST\; the various predecessor technical and vocational colleges\; medica
 l training. • We hope the symposium engenders new critical approaches to
  the study of geographically embedded histories of tertiary education an
 d its relations to cultural life and the local economy. Please send a br
