Navigating Islamic Knowledge in Security Britain
This paper is based on ethnographic work with – predominantly Somali – young pious Muslim women in London. It discusses the ways in which these young women search for, debate, and reason about what constitutes authoritative Islamic knowledge in a context where Muslims’ engagements with Islamic scholarship have come under intense scrutiny. Many young pious Muslims stress the importance of distancing themselves from their parents’ ‘traditional’ forms of knowledge, while choosing knowledge from a range of different sources and traditions of reform, and seeking it in diverse, multi-ethnic settings. They emphasise the importance of combining forms and concepts taken from Islamic teachings and texts with those from secular university settings. This paper argues that these young Muslims engage with knowledge through different co-existing modes – including choice, reason, submission, and affect – and through new forms of sociality. In so doing, they redefine their understandings of what constitutes authoritative Islamic knowledge, and unsettle political debates and policies around Islam, integration and security in Britain.
