DESCRIPTION:Around the world\, climate change is intensifying socio-envir
onmental risks and making these more unpredictable. As well as being the
generation expected to live longest with the effects of climate change\
, children and young people are recognized as amongst the most vulnerabl
e to these effects. Children and young people should not be regarded sol
ely as victims of climate change\, however: they hold unique perspective
s on its many manifestations and potential responses.\n \nThis invite on
ly one-day event is the latest in a series of intergenerational conferen
ces organised by Manchester Environmental Education Network (MEEN) with
the aim to bring together children and adults from Manchester and beyond
to share and debate ideas prompted by MEEN’s work in Manchester schools
. This event has been co-organised by the Sustainable Consumption Instit
ute (SCI)\, University of Manchester\, to coincide with a two-week visit
to the SCI from Rachel Trajber\, a Brazilian expert on sustainability e
ducation. Rachel leads the education programme at the Brazilian Governme
nt's Centre for the Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (
CEMADEN)\, and previously worked as the national environmental education
coordinator at the Brazilian Ministry of Education. \n \nThe intergener
ational conference will mark the culmination of the Building Bridges par
tnership between SCI\, MEEN and CEMADEN and will include short talks\, w
orkshops and discussions to explore climate change\, risk and resilience
and think about what can be learned by looking across contexts and brin
ging together generations. Specifically\, this event will introduce the
work of three schools\, one from Manchester\, one in São Paulo state and
another from the Amazon region\, who have mapped their neighbourhoods f
or climate related risks and vulnerabilities. There will be key note spe
akers from Greater Manchester’s Fire Brigade service and CEMADEN and a r
ange of workshops aimed at a range of age groups including: making a rec
ycled rain gauge\; designing a sustainable farm\; and school presentatio
ns dealing with soil contamination and social action on climate change.\
