Join the Faculty of Biology Medicine and Health (FBMH) for our 2024 International Men’s Day Event with Andy Romero-Birkbeck, a health, fitness and wellbeing expert with over 20 years of industry experience, who specialises in the delivery of on-site health screening and workplace wellbeing education.

In the UK, men are three times more likely than women to end their own lives. Suicide is also the largest cause of death for men aged 20-49. The reasons for this are complex, however social expectations of masculinity mean that men may be less likely to seek help for suicidal thoughts or behaviours than women.
A report by Mental health charity MIND found a positive increase in men’s help-seeking behaviours and their ability to speak openly about their mental health in the last decade. However, there is still much more to be done to make sure that men are receiving the right support and feel able to reach out for help.
Speaker bio:
Andy is a health, fitness and wellbeing expert with over 20 years industry experience. Starting out in the fitness industry, Andy moved into private health screening before settling in workplace wellbeing in 2012. Andy specialises in the delivery of on-site health screening and workplace wellbeing education, covering both physical and mental wellbeing.
Andy is passionate in workplace wellbeing. In January 2020, having worked in workplace wellbeing for 8 years, Andy and his wife decided to found their own organisation 'We Are Wellbeing'. Andy was driven by wanting to have a new, authentic approach to wellbeing in the workplace, and quickly began colloborating with companies as big as Nestle, all over the world.
We Are Wellbeing specialises not only in wellbeing education (ranging from seminars to workshops) but also in on-site health screening. This means performing 1-2-1 health checks with all level of employees, and giving individuals the opportunity to sit down with a health and wellbeing expert. This is incredibly important in getting people to talk about their physical health in a safe environment. As we all know, good physical wellbeing can have a huge positive impact on mental wellbeing too!
This event will be online on zoom : 12:00-12:45pm, 19th November
Here, Andy will be discussing this year's theme of 'positive male role models', alongside the workplace wellbeing, having ran training courses and workshops surrounding mental wellbeing. Andy helps build confidence in having effective wellbeing conversations at work, and aiding in increasing knowledge of mental health in managers and senior leaders to help their teams.
This will then be followed by a Q&A where our speaker will answer audience questions surrounding men’s mental health and wellbeing.
