Abstract:
Let me tell you a tale of Gulliver's travels upon islands of different shapes and sizes...
Strictly speaking, I will talk about how floating elastic sheets deform when subject to a point force (i.e. when poked). In doing so, we'll traverse lengthscales exploring the bending, stretching and wrinkling of both thick and thin sheets. Hopefully we'll have time to see how ultrathin sheets deform under ballistic impact and how botanical examples break the mould.
