We held our 5th annual workshop on Advances in X-ray Imaging (in collaboration with 3Dmagination, Diamond Light Source and CCPi) for the first time online (via Zoom Webinar) over two morning sessions on Monday 1st & Tuesday 2nd February 2021.
Initially planned to be held on the 9th and 10th of June 2020 at the Harwell Campus, the workshop had to be cancelled and postponed due to the Covid19 pandemic. The 5th workshop was a great success with the surprising advantage that relocating the workshop online has also made it accessible to a larger and more diverse audience. The workshop attracted scientists from 18 countries spread over 5 continents.
Thanks to our excellent speakers, a variety of complementary imaging techniques (synchrotron/lab-based X-rays, neutron facilities, correlative microscopy) were highlighted and applied for dynamic studies (catalytic reactor, plasticity, sintering processes, bat wings, superalloy, methods to investigate cracking, Li-Ion batteries, soft tissues, imaging of large samples). With the huge amount of data generated, the workshop revealed again the problem we are facing with data manipulation and the need to develop new ways to visualise, extract and predict/validate scientific information from the datasets. Techniques/rigs development and data mining have been a game changer for many applications over the past workshops and we will expand further this growing momentum during the 6th workshop next year.
We would like to say a huge thank you to all our speakers, chairs, sponsors and delegates who helped to make the conference a success.
Winners of the poster session:
1st - Mr Sebastian Weber, PhD Student, Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie (KIT), 'Porosity Analysis of Ni/Al2O3 Catalysts by Multi-scale Tomography'.
Tied 2nd – Dr Win Min Tun, PDRA, Diamond Light Source, 'Multiscale placental tissue characterisation with synchrotron micro X-ray tomogram'.
Tied 2nd - Mr Matthew Jones, PhD student, The University of Manchester at Harwell, '4D in-situ XCT of Aerosol Filtration'.
