DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni\n\nNGOs have generally se
 rved as issue-entrepreneurs\, advocates and service providers\, leaving 
 law enforcement to states. However\, in recent decades\, environmental a
 nd human rights organisations around the world have come to play a growi
 ng role in enforcing international laws\, both through ‘direct action’ e
 nforcement and through the courts. What is driving this trend? Is it a p
 ositive development? And what are the implications for wider transnation
 al advocacy movements?\n\nMette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni is Professor in Int
 ernational Relations in the Department of Politics and International Stu
 dies (POLIS) at Cambridge University\, and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex Col
 lege. Her research focuses on the historical evolution\, design and effe
 ctiveness of international organisations\, and the role(s)\, both histor
 ical and contemporary\, of non-state actors in global governance. Her mo
 st recent book Climate Activism\, Digital Technology and Organisational 
 Change (co-authored with Nina Hall) was published by Cambridge Universit
 y Press in December 2024.
