DESCRIPTION:Emma Horton (University of Warwick) will speak at the Probabi
lity seminar.\n\nTitle: Genealogies of branching Markov processes\n\nAbs
tract: Branching processes are pertinent to understanding many different
real world processes such as cell division\, population growth and neut
ron transport. In particular\, understanding their genealogical structur
es can prove useful for parameter estimation\, Monte Carlo simulations a
nd scaling limits. In this talk\, I will discuss a decomposition of bran
ching processes known as the spine decomposition\, which allows one to u
nderstand the genealogies of conditioned branching processes in terms of
a reduced tree of biased particles. I will then discuss some applicatio
 ns of this decomposition.
