  Rationality problems\, degenerations of the diagonal\, and prelog Chow 
 rings\n\nAbstract: The degeneration method due to Voisin-Merkurjev-Colli
 ot-Thelene-Pirutka-Totaro-Schreieder et al. has led to spectacular advan
 ces on rationality questions recently\, but a number of deep problems\, 
 such as the question of stable rationality for certain classes of (very 
 general) hypersurfaces of small degree in projective space\, e.g. cubic 
 hypersurfaces\, remain open. The applicability and scope of the degenera
 tion method could be greatly improved if one could make use of degenerat
 ions with more badly singular central fibres. We will report on work in 
 progress (joint with Michel van Garrel and Hans-Christian von Bothmer) t
 hat seeks to accomplish this using some techniques inspired by log geome
