In the last couple of decades the arts and humanities have been in the grips of ‘memory fever’. This session aims to explain what is meant by ‘cultural memory’ and offer an overview of influential theories of cultural memory which have circulated in recent years with reference to postmemory (Hirsch); multidirectional memory (Rothberg); palimpsestic memory (Silverman) among others, as they are used to elucidate literary and filmic texts.
