DESCRIPTION:My presentation draws on a three-year research project funded
by the British Academy which investigates the transatlantic development
and diffusion of interlingual dubbing in the years which saw technologi
cal innovations transform the global motion picture trade. The presentat
ion will highlight the challenges (and joys) of doing historical researc
h in Audiovisual Translation (AVT). I will propose an application of the
economic theory of technological innovation to the study of AVT history
\, focusing on dubbing. I will explain how this operation of acoustic re
-recording came to be used by transatlantic film traders as a language c
onversion method. I will conclude by discussing the role played by Holly
wood in commercialising dubbing in Western Europe and in other parts of
 the world.
