 n\n\nLonger Abstract: Mass extinctions\, from the first survival of our 
 earliest ancestors to the disappearance of the non-avian dinosaurs\, sha
 ped the course of natural history. But what is a mass extinction? Should
  we lend any credence to theorists who argue that we are in the midst of
  one right now? The evidence raises one possibility: that all of human h
 istory has taken place in the context of an ongoing mass extinction even
 t. To see our present in this way suggests that we—the children of this 
 extinction—must reconceive how we understand Earth’s past.\n
