DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Martin Van beek - Manchester\n\nTitle: Fusion System
s and Rank Two Amalgams\n\nAbstract: Saturated fusion systems capture ab
stract conjugacy in $p$-subgroups of finite groups and have found applic
ation in finite group theory\, representation theory and algebraic topol
ogy. One of the ways to approach saturated fusion systems and their clas
sification is by understanding their essential subgroups. In this talk\,
we classify fusion systems $\\mathcal{F}$ in which there are two $\\mat
 hrm{Aut}_{\\mathcal{F}}(S)-invariant essential subgroups whose normalize
r systems generate $\\mathcal{F}$. We employ the amalgam method and\, as
a bonus\, obtain $p$-local characterizations of certain rank two group
amalgams whose parabolic subgroups involve strongly $p$-embedded subgrou
ps\, generalizing work of Delgado and Stellmacher.\n\nPlace: Frank Adams
