DESCRIPTION:This seminar is about the historical future as atmospheric re
searchers envisioned it in the early decades of the twentieth century\,
from the era of Marconi wireless and the Wright flier to digital computi
ng and the TIROS weather satellite. It maps the history of weather stud
ies and charts the pathways by which meteorology became atmospheric scie
nce.\n\nA 1960 planning document crowed optimistically\, "Our goal is to
portray everything atmospheric\, everywhere\, always." In their own wa
ys and in their own eras\, the protagonists in this story would have agr
eed.\n\nThis presentation combines intimate story telling with big pictu
re historiography\, introducing a methodology intended to be interesting
and useful for historians of all stripes.
