 : \n\nPublic health nursing is and always has been shaped by forces outs
 ide of nursing\, often forces beyond the control of nursing. Yet\, despi
 te\, or perhaps because of such obstacles\, nurses have developed a nurs
 ing service that responds to the health needs of communities large and s
 mall\, urban and rural\, poor and more advantaged. This presentation wil
 l provide a brief overview of the evolution of the profession during its
  early formative decades. Then\, to better understand the forces that sh
 aped the profession in the past and are\, to some extent\, continuing to
  shape the profession today\, it will analyze the experiences of four pu
 blic health nurses in the mid-20th century.\n\nBio: \n\nRima D. Apple\, 
 Ph.D.\, is Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, US
 A. She has pub-lished extensively in women’s history\, the history of me
 dicine and nursing\, and the history of nutrition. Among her eight books
  are Vitamania: Vitamins in American culture which received the Kremers 
 Award\, 1998\, from the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. I
 n 2011 she received the Mary Adelaide Nutting Award for Exemplary Histor
 ical Research and Writing\, from the American Association for the Histo-
 ry of Nursing. She has lectured extensively both in the United States an
 d internationally. Most recently she was Visiting Professor at Glasgow C
 aledonian University. She is the recipient of grants and awards from the
  National Science Foundation\, the National Library of Medicine\, the Am
 erican College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists\, and the Wellcome Tru
 st.\n
