The significance Of Purity Rites In The Cultural Appropriation Of Hindu Symbols
Many recent accounts of the cultural appropriation of Hindu imagery in the media focus almost exclusively on the unauthorised or questionable use of Hindu symbols, and especially on socio-political grounds concerning the lack of entitlement of their use. In this talk I will extend the discussion to examine a further factor which accounts for the feelings of offence felt by Hindu communities when their imagery, in particular representations of deities, is used in certain consumer contexts. This factor concerns purity rites and the centrality that these have in structuring the relationship between the sacred and the non-sacred – where the non-sacred encompasses the mundane and the profane. Two ethical codes inherent in Hindu religious practice which determine how to interact with sacred things will be discussed in order to explain the reception that certain high-profile media cases have had by Hindus. These are respectively darshan (a type of gaze) and sacred handling.
