 ook. In recent years\, major shifts in global markets from North to Sout
 h have created a new geography of trade and consumption in the agricultu
 ral sector. The processes of twenty-first-century globalization are fund
 amentally changing the politics and governance of agricultural supply ch
 ains\, Schleifer argues\, with profound implications for the environment
  and the effectiveness of transnational business governance. He offers a
  political economy analysis of the deepening crisis of commodity-driven 
 deforestation and explores the complex and evolving picture of both the 
 risks and opportunities for sustainable commodity governance in the curr
 ent phase of globalization.\n \nBio\n \nPhilip Schleifer is Associate Pr
 ofessor of Transnational Governance at the Political Science Department 
 at the University of Amsterdam. His research agenda focuses on the polit
 ics and governance of sustainability in the global economy. His past and
  present projects investigate the effectiveness and transparency of volu
 ntary standards in global value chains\, the political economy of commod
 ity production\, and the politics of supply chain regulation in the Euro
 pean Union.\n
