DESCRIPTION:Gavin is interested in identifying the molecular basis of cel
lular recognition events both between cells with our own bodies and also
with pathogens. To investigate this\, he has developed a range of cell-
and protein-based assays to discover extracellular interactions mediate
d by cell surface receptor proteins in a systematic and scalable manner.
Using these tools\, his laboratory has made important contributions suc
h as discovering receptor-ligand pairs that are essential for fundamenta
l biological processes such as sperm-egg recognition in mammals\, and th
e invasion of human erythrocytes by the parasite responsible for severe
malaria. In his talk\, Gavin will outline the development of these metho
ds and how they can be applied to a range of cellular recognition proces
ses. He will discuss recent research using these approaches to identify
subunit vaccine targets for parasitic diseases and also new receptor lig
 and interactions between human leukocytes.
