DESCRIPTION:On November 8th\, 2013\, the School of Arts\, Languages and C
ultures will be hosting a conference on Digital Humanities for all those
at the University of Manchester with a stake in this growing area of re
search activity. For more information\, please visit the conference web
 site: http://www.alc.manchester.ac.uk/research/events/conferences/digita
l-humanities/\n\nThe aim of the conference is to foster discussion that
explores the potential for Digital Humanities\, to showcase existing ini
tiatives within the University\, and to identify both the challenges and
opportunities for such work at the University of Manchester. The intent
ion is that the conference will act as springboard for a major initiativ
e to develop this area of activity in the future.\n\nThe event will be h
eld at the Kanaris Lecture Theatre in the Manchester Museum\, and will c
onclude with a dinner reception hosted in the Museum’s Fossil Room. Con
firmed external speakers include Melissa Terras (UCL) who will speak on
her new book\, Defining Digital Humanities\, and also Professor Marilyn
Deegan (Kings College London) who will be speaking on the impact of Digi
tal Humanities.\n\nThe conference will also provide an overview of relev
ant research and initiatives already underway within the University. We
are aware there are many such initiatives\, and we seek contributions fo
r short talks (no more than eight minutes)\, from academic staff and pos
tgraduate research students from across campus whose work fits under the
broad umbrella of Digital Humanties. We are particularly interested in
the following themes\, though we welcome proposals in other areas.\n\n•
Visualisations and/or working at data and texts at scale \n•	Digital H
umanities and/as textual and material studies \n•	Social media and parti
cipatory models of knowledge formation\n•	The relationship of Open Data
and/or Open Access on Digital Humanities scholarship\n•	Research-led tea
ching and transformative pedagogies\n•	Mapping knowledge – geospatial te
chnologies and approaches\n\nFor information about registration and subm
itting an abstract\, please visit the conference website: http://www.alc
 .manchester.ac.uk/research/events/conferences/digital-humanities/\n
