DESCRIPTION:The first speaker for the Advances in Biosciences Seminar Ser
ies September 2024 is Professor Catherina Becker from the Center for Mol
ecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) and the Center for Regenerativ
e Therapies Dresden (CRTD)\, Germany. Catherina is also the co-Director
of the Wellcome Trust funded 4 year PhD programme in Tissue Repair at th
e University of Edinburgh. Title: Macrophages orchestrate regenerative n
eurogenesis during successful spinal cord repair\n\nAbstract: The Becker
group use adult and larval zebrafish to investigate spinal cord regener
ation and mechanisms of motor neuron development and repair in motor neu
ron diseases. After a spinal cord injury\, the central nervous system ge
ts invaded by a number of different non-neural cell types. The role of t
he interaction between neural and non-neural tissues in successful spina
l cord regeneration is not well understood. Catherina Becker is going to
talk about the function of macrophages for regeneration of neurons afte
r spinal injury. \n\nSpeaker Bio: Catherina Becker obtained an MRes in H
uman Genetics and a PhD in Neurosciences from the University of Bremen\,
Germany\, studying development and successful regeneration of the amphi
bian (frogs and salamanders) central nervous system. For her first postd
octoral training post\, she moved to the renowned Swiss Federal Institut
e of Technology in Zürich\, Switzerland on an EMBO-funded postdoctoral f
ellowship. Her postgraduate studies continued at the University of Calif
ornia\, and the Centre for Molecular Neurobiology in Hamburg on German R
esearch Foundation (DFG) Fellowships. The Becker group moved to the Univ
ersity of Edinburgh in 2005 where Catherina Becker was Professor for Neu
ral Development and Regeneration and the Deputy Director of the Centre f
or Discovery Brain Sciences. In July 2021\, the Becker group moved to th
e Center for Regenerative Therapies at the TU Dresden. For this\, Cather
ina Becker was awarded an Alexander-von-Humboldt Professorship\, Germany
’s most highly endowed research prize.\n\nCatherina is a founding member
of EuFishBioMed\, the European Society of Fish Models in Biology and Me
dicine\, she is on the directorial board of the International Society fo
r Regenerative Biology ISRB\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (
FRSB)\, and the co-Director of the Wellcome Trust funded 4 year PhD prog
ramme in Tissue Repair at the University of Edinburgh. \n\nThe seminar w
ill be hosted by Ximena Soto
