DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\nThe next MANCEPT research seminar will be on Th
 ursday 17 March\, when Ashwini Vasanthakumar (York) will give a presenta
 tion titled “Epistemic Privilege and Victims’ Duties to Resist Their Opp
 ression”. \n\nThe seminar starts at 4pm in the Arthur Lewis Building 2nd
  floor boardroom.\n\nThe presentation will be followed by a question and
  answer session that will finish at around 5.30pm.  \n\nBest\,\nSteph\n\
 nABSTRACT: Victims of injustice are prominent protagonists in efforts to
  resist injustice\, and many argue that they have a duty to do so. \nWhe
 re theorists have agreed\, they have primarily cast victims' duties as s
 elf-regarding duties (of Kantian self-respect\; to one's well-being\; or
  to one's rational capacities). \nI provide an alternative account of vi
 ctims' duties to resist injustice that is grounded in the duty to rescue
  or assist. \nI argue that in virtue of their victimhood\, victims are e
 pistemically privileged with respect to injustice and are uniquely posit
 ioned to assist fellow victims.\nPrimarily\, this is done through testim
 ony: victims alert other actors to the need for assistance and initiate 
 and coordinate resistance efforts. \nI illustrate the duty and its limit
 s by looking at two modes of oppression--persecution and structural inju
 stice--that are distinguished by moral determinacy. \nI briefly consider
  what virtues associated with the role of witness should be fostered in 
 order to overcome limitations in victims' epistemic privilege. \nAnd I c
 onsider objections from demandingness and fairness.\n
