DESCRIPTION:Professor Colin Sibley\, Professor of Child Health and Physio
logy at The University of Manchester - 'Finding solutions to problem pre
gnancies. Despite many improvements in obstetric practice and care\, and
advances in knowledge through research\, it is estimated that more than
half a million women die each year as a result of pregnancy and childbi
rth\, and millions more become ill or disabled around the world. At pres
ent\, no in utero therapies exist for the early screening\, management o
r treatment of pre-eclampsia or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) -
two of the most common diseases of pregnancy - and their precise causes
are unknown. It is clear that the origin of many cases of pre-eclampsia
and IUGR is in an abnormally functioning placenta. Therefore\, this lec
ture will describe some of the work The University of Manchester is doin
g to better understand the placenta and what goes wrong with this organ
in pregnancy diseases. There is a non-refundable booking fee of £5 per p
erson. Please contact Jean Jones at jean.jones@manchester.ac.uk or on 01
 61 306 3066 for further details.
