DESCRIPTION:At this Original Thinking Lecture\, Frank Geels\, Eddie Davie
s Professor of Sustainability Transition\, will give his inaugural lectu
re as Eddie Davies Chair.\nNet-zero transitions have entered a new and c
onfusing phase since the COVID-19 pandemic\, the war in Ukraine\, and th
e gas price crisis.\n\nOn the one hand\, net-zero transitions are accele
rating in electricity and auto-mobility systems\, driven by cost reducti
ons and increased deployment of solar-PV\, wind turbines\, and electric
vehicles.\n\nOn the other hand\, political populism and societal accepta
nce problems are leading to delays and the weakening of targets in some
countries (like the UK).\n\nIn this lecture Professor Frank Geels aims t
o make sense of these contradictory developments\, using socio-technical
transitions theory and wide-ranging empirical information across emergi
ng niche-innovations\, existing systems\, and exogenous (‘landscape’) de
 velopments.
