DESCRIPTION:Morgan Centre and Department of Sociology seminar by Professo
r Sirpa Wrede Centre of Excellence for Research in Ageing and Care\, Uni
versity of Helsinki\, Finland\n\nThis paper considers the multifaceted n
ature of state allegiances amidst contemporary geopolitical tensions. It
argues that conflicts and war revitalise the significance of state alle
giances\, revitalizing nationalistic discourses that employ militaristic
rhetoric for mimetic warfare. Through a lens of mimetic affinities and
alterities\, the paper examines how nationalist narratives construct ide
as of shared kinship and the exclusion of Others. It also considers the
implications for individuals navigating multiple allegiances\, with a sp
ecific focus on Russian-background people in Finland. By unraveling the
complexities of allegiance\, the paper underscores the dangerous dynamic
s of strategic remembrance\, public memory and antipathy.\n\nBio: Dr Sir
pa Wrede is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Helsinki and V
ice Director of the Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence for
Research in Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare)\, where she leads the Univers
ity of Helsinki's Migration\, Care\, and Ageing (MICA) research team. Wi
th expertise in state and citizenship dynamics\, her research focuses on
migration\, health\, ageing\, and care. She also examines professional
 occupations like medical doctors\, midwives\, nurses\, and care workers\
, exploring themes such as medicalization\, migrant workforce integratio
n\, digitalisation\, and neoliberal reforms. Her current interest lies o
n understanding how the recent border hostilities are influencing how Ru
ssian-background people residing in Finland live their daily lives and h
ow they perceive their future life trajectories.\n
