 pute between Zambian workers and Chinese management\, this seminar exami
 nes radio kinship in the context of abundant labour and scarce opportuni
 ties to be gainfully employed in Chipata in Zambia's Eastern Province. G
 ogo Breeze\, a popular radio personality on Breeze FM\, responds to his 
 listeners’ frequent evocations of poverty by refusing to consider them a
 s members of the generic poor. \nInstead\, he deploys idioms of kinship 
 by which his status as the listeners’ grandfather on air assigns to hims
 elf moral authority that is both intimate and infallible. The radio gran
 dfather responded to the workers' grievances by visiting the provincial 
 Labour Office and by broadcasting a richly allusive story about exploita
 tion. As one modality of mutual dependence\, radio kinship offered a fra
 me for making claims that was compatible with what the workers demanded.
