 iment to study public opinion on integration.\n\nTitle: A desirable immi
 grant and a well-integrated immigrant: a policy preference divergence. E
 vidence from survey experiments in the UK and the Netherlands.\n\nAuthor

 \nAbstract: The last decade witnessed shifts in policies of immigrant in
 tegration in most European countries thought to be multiculturalist\, as
  the idea of multiculturalism came into disrepute for apparently failing
  to successfully integrate immigrants. Yet\, the study of public attitud
 es towards integration still lags behind the study of preferences for im
 migrant restrictions. Using a conjoint experiment design\, which allows 
 measuring a complex\, multidimensional opinion\, we find that in both th
 e Netherlands and the UK the public opinion on integration is divergent 
 from opinion on immigration restrictions. While the public focuses on ed
 ucation and employment prospects in what kinds of immigrants their count
 ry welcomes\, we see dominance of the social and cultural concerns in de
 ciding if an immigrant has truly become ‘one of us’. We also find that i
 ntegration attitudes are a matter of wide spread consensus among differe
 nt social groups\, people with different view of immigration\, and acros
 s our two countries. Surprisingly\, none of the main theoretical explana
 tions of attitudes towards immigration seem to hold for public opinion o
 n integration. An exception to this is the existence of the distinctive 
 ‘liberal elite’\, who place a greater importance on immigrants voting an
 d showing liberal attitudes to women. \n\nAll welcome!\nLight lunch prov
