The biosciences are witnessing a rapid growth and diversification of both research data and publications. Research progress depends on reliable and efficient mechanisms to select, quality control, archive, share and find research. The peer reviewed research paper remains the predominant mode of sharing peer-reviewed research findings, and journals play important roles also as a proxy for quality and impact in research assessment. Bernd will discuss the editorial and peer review process at highly selective journals, focusing in particular on EMBO’s transparent editorial process. In times of limited funding, the pressures to publish in a subset of journals can increase dramatically. Bernd will discuss the challenges this poses to the publication process in the context of reproducibility and scientific integrity, and highlight measures that journals can take to ensure that peer-reviewed publication optimally aids research progress to remain a hallmark of a reliable and self-correcting scientific process. Bernd will also discuss new approaches to enhance the publication and the discoverability of research data, focussing on the EMBO SourceData data discovery technology. The publication of validated source data with associated reagents and methods in journals and repositories and enhanced editorial screening procedures for image manipulation and scientific reporting standards ensure transparency, reproducibility and accountability in the reporting of scientific research. Preprint posting is one way to address Europe’s Open Science agenda. Bernd will discuss the promises and challenges of the nascent preprint movement in the biosciences. Finally, he will discuss how a metrics focussed research assessment process can undermine the quality of the research process, focussing on the San Francisco Declaration for Research Assessment (DORA).
