 i Yoshitaka (Professor in Sociology and Cultural Studies\, Tokyo Univers
 ity of Arts) will deliver a public lecture entitled 'Lukewarm Nationalis
 m: The 2020 Tokyo Olympics\, Social Media and Affective Communities'.\n\
 nMy presentation considers the way in which a new nationalism is being c
 reated in the age of the Internet and social media by looking at the 202
 0 Tokyo Olympic Games and other Games in the past. The development of me
 dia technology from film\, radio\, television to the Internet and social
  media has changed the character of the Olympic Games as media event. It
  has been argued that these developments have created shared consciousne
 ss\, a sense of belonging and enthusiastic nationalism.\n\nWhile the spr
 ead of the Internet and social media was originally expected to contribu
 te to globalization or to the emergence of global citizens in a global v
 illage as McLuhan once predicted\, it seems that the world is much more 
 divided\, fragmented and fluid than ever. At the same time\, digital med
 ia organizes various layers of community not only by ideology but also b
 y affect: affective communities. This often leads to the rise of chauvin
 istic nationalism in developed countries. With reference to McLuhan’s fa
 mous argument on hot media and cool media\, I am going to examine the ch
 aracter of contemporary ‘lukewarm nationalism’ which I would coin in the
