DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Talks invites leading artists\, thinkers and curators
to explore the driving forces\, influences and sources of inspiration w
ithin contemporary art.\nThe series is a collaboration between the Whitw
orth and Manchester Metropolitan University and is programmed by Pavel B
üchler.\n\nFree\, no need to book. 11am-12:30pm.\n\n19 February - Hayley
Tompkins\n\nOver the two decades since graduating from Glasgow School o
f Art Hayley Tompkins' work has evolved from small-scale watercolour pai
nting into an experimentation with painted domestic and commonplace obje
cts and found photographs. She sees painting as a mode of close attentio
n to the material world and the residue of everyday life. In her paintin
gs and installations she creates an atmosphere of intimacy and immersion
\, often enhanced by her use of plastic or metal trays as a support and
a framing device\, while also posing the question of the action of paint
ing as a process of contemplation rather than production. Tomkins was on
e of the artists shown in Scotland + Venice 2013 at the 55th Venice Bien
nale (alongside Corin Sworn and Duncan Campbell)\, her work was featured
in the British Art Show 8\, 2015.
