DESCRIPTION:SICK! Festival is the first festival in the UK dedicated to r
evealing and debating our most urgent physical\, mental and social chall
enges. It is delivered in partnership with leading arts organisations\,
medical and academic institutions\, charities and community groups.\n\nS
 laptalk.\n\nAction Hero (UK).\n\nAt the Whitworth\n\nThursday 19 March -
  3pm – 9pm.\nFree admission.\n6 hours.\n\nInspired by the self-aggrandis
ing of boxers at the pre-fight weigh in\, Slap Talk is a verbal sparring
match that is both a linguistic version of the fight itself and a refle
ction upon the violence present in everyday language.\n\nSpeaking to eac
h other and to the audience via a live feed from a camera to a monitor\,
the performers rant\, insult and threaten each other in a scripted vers
ion of a pre-fight press conference crossed with a 24 hour rolling news
channel.\n\nOver 6 hours\, an autocue scrolls a continuous barrage of pa
ssive aggressive violence of lovers talking\, the hard sell of a shoppin
g channel\, the anger of the fire and brimstone preacher\, the subtle vi
olence of middle class one-upmanship.\n\nAction Hero is the collaboratio
n between UK artists Gemma Paintin and James Stenhouse. They make live a
rt and performance that seeks to use audiences as collaborators and co-c
onspirators. Whilst exploring the epic\, they create performance that is
intimate\, distinctive and invigorating.\n\nAction Hero have toured to
theatres\, festivals\, bars and public spaces from an old cinema in Bang
kok to Shanghai Grand Theatre to a Satan’s Riders Motorcycle club house
in Tasmania and a blues bar in Texas on the same stage as James Brown. T
hey have been shortlisted for several awards and won an Austin (Texas) C
ritic’s Table Award in 2013.\n\n‘ultimate discursive arena\, interrogati
ng the construction and application of dialogue and performance…intimate
\, engaging and unsettling work’ This is Tomorrow\n\n‘see why this mav
erick company\, with its engaging DIY aesthetic\, is attracting so much
attention’ The Guardian\n\nThis is a six hour long performance. Audien
ces are encouraged to stay for as long as they can but welcome to take b
reaks whenever they like.\n\n\nCREDITS\nConcept\, Design & Direction by:
