DESCRIPTION:Access to social capital is stratified by socioeconomic statu
s and has been cross-sectionally linked to involvement \nin voluntary or
ganizations. Yet\, we know little about the origin and interplay of thes
e empirical regularities. \nRegression analyses on German panel data (SC
6-NEPS) reveal that people rich in social capital join organizations \nm
ore often (selection). Furthermore\, joiners access more and higher-stat
us social capital after joining (socializing \nopportunities). Low-statu
s individuals disproportionally extend their reach towards higher positi
ons through \ninvolvement but join less often. Compared to a counterfact
ual situation in which nobody joins\, current \ninvolvement patterns mar
ginally reduce some socioeconomic inequalities in access to social capit
 al. \n
