As part of the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science School Seminar Series, we'll be welcoming Prof Villiam Bortolotti, from Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, Italy, on Monday 24 June. with a talk titled “Time domain magnetic resonance relaxometry for fluids in porous media: a versatile set of tools to characterize porous materials of different nature”.
In this presentation, the basic concepts of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry in the time domain (TD-MRR) are introduced. The talk will then focus on applications of TD-MRR, NMR Imaging (MRI) and FFC (Fast Field Cycling) techniques to porous media saturated with fluids containing 1H nuclei (such as water and/or oil). The techniques can be used to study porous materials of completely different nature. Examples on food, rocks, cements and porous catalysts, and different applications, such as monitoring cement paste setting or for the characterization of functionalised catalyst supports, are illustrated. The data inversion techniques and the NMR sequences used for the experiments, which can strongly influence the MRPM results, are also discussed. In particular, in this lecture, the Uniform Penalty (UPEN) inversion algorithms (in both one and two dimensions), developed in-house, are briefly presented.
Refreshments will be served from 10:30, and the seminar will commence at 11:00, in The Mill room C63/64.
