DESCRIPTION:Part of the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies s
eminar series.\n\nAbstract: Legal identity is a global story. Over the c
oming decade\, states are aiming to provide all people\, everywhere with
evidentiary proof of their legal existence as part of the 2030 Sustaina
ble Development Goals (SDGs). Notwithstanding\, my research in the Domin
ican Republic illustrates how the expansion of legal identity practices
have also forced the thorny question of nationality\, leading to dispute
s over who the state recognises as members of the body politic. This pap
er will focus principally on the experiences of native-born documented D
ominicans of (largely\, but not exclusively) Haitian descent\, many of w
hom have encountered obstacles when attempting to access or renew their
paperwork. The talk will examine the ways in which social protection mea
sures designed to include citizens for state assistance can instead resu
lt in exclusionary practices on the basis of race\, ethnicity and/or nat
ional origin. The research therefore speaks to the struggles that other
groups are currently facing over contemporary identification practices.
This includes Latino-descended populations born in the US\, the Windrush
generation and their children in the UK as well as the experiences of E
 U citizens in a post-Brexit world.\n
