This talk will introduce some of the core ideas that underpin the DEMAND Research Centre. It is organised around three simple propositions: that energy is used in the course of accomplishing social practices; that social practices and energy demand are shaped by infrastructures and institutions, and that these systems reproduce interpretations of need and entitlement, and of normal and acceptable ways of life. Being outlined will be some of the challenges we face in confronting basic issues about what energy is for in a manner that has real impact on research and policy.
