 pendence\, Kurdish national movements emerged in the late19th and early 
 20th centuries.  It has often been argued geography and wider geo-strate
 gic considerations have prevented „Kurdistan“ to emerge as a nation stat
 e. Others\, however\, argue that now\, with the evident brake down of or
 der in the region\, Kurdistan could have its chance. In any case\, as it
  has been throughout history\, Kurdistan will be within and between the 
 two big non Arab powers of the Middle East\, Turkey and Iran.\n\nDr Walt
 er Posch is a historian of the early Modern Middle East with a special f
 ocus on the Ottoman and Safavid Empires. He is also a regional policy ex
