The STis and Sexual Health – STASH study: process evaluation of a peer supporter intervention to improve adolescent sexual health
Young people in the UK are at high risk of sexually transmitted infections and report higher levels of unsafe sex than any other age group. Building on a successful anti-smoking intervention called ASSIST, the ‘STis and Sexual Health’ (STASH) intervention involves: identification and recruitment of the most influential students as peer supporters; training and support to these students by specialist trainers; positive sex and relationships messages, spread by peer supporters to their friendship groups in person and via social media. In this talk, Dr Mark McCann from the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow will give an overview of the study design and discuss how social network analysis has been used to study the social processes through which the intervention may operate to improve health outcomes, and the ability of the peer nomination process to reach all pupils in the school network.
