This is the second event in the series organised by the Innovation Academy; a new umbrella initiative joint between the Innovation Factory, FSE Business Engagement and Innovation and the Masood Entrepreneurship Centre which has the aim of bringing together knowledge, expertise and routes to facilitate the commercialisation of our research.

The Innovation Academy is organising these events to support IP commercialisation within the computer science area. These workshops aim to inspire and accelerate the translation of knowledge into products, services or processes to deliver tangible benefit which will also enhance your research capability, profile, reputation and career trajectory. The events are aimed at academics, postdocs and students working and studying in the areas of Digitalisation/AI/Big Data/Open Source software/Cyber Security etc and are being specially tailored with relevant agenda topics and speakers.

Session chair: Alex Creswell

Alex left the British diplomatic service in 2020 after 27 years in a variety of National Security roles, often including a technology angle. He has led an operational division of GCHQ and has served in the Cabinet Office, directing the team of analysts (the Joint Intelligence Organisation) which provides the British Prime Minister’s daily briefing and strategic assessments for the NSC. From 2017, Alex served as FCO Mission Lead for Cyber and Technology, working with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to provide an important element of the UK’s operational defense against cyber threats. His role at the University of Manchester focuses on helping academics in the Computer Science department to turn their innovation into early-stage companies. He also advises Graphcore, a UK start-up which creates accelerator chips for AI/ML, and Premise, a US data analytics software company.
