DESCRIPTION:Recent years have witnessed a dramatic rediscovery of the mus
 ic of Mieczys?aw Weinberg (1919–1996)\, the Polish-born composer who twi
 ce escaped from Nazi invasions and finally settled in Moscow. His substa
 ntial output includes some of the most powerful Holocaust-commemorative 
 music ever written\, notably his Auschwitz-based opera\, The Passenger\,
  dubbed a ‘masterpiece’ by Shostakovich.\n\nThe four-day conference at t
 he University of Manchester marks the beginning of Weinberg’s centenary 
 year. It brings together scholars and practitioners from East and West\,
  with the composer’s first daughter\, Victoria Bishops\, as Guest of Hon
 our.\n\nThe conference is co-sponsored by the British Academy the Adam M
 ickiewicz Institute\, Warsaw.\n\nThe programme dovetails with a cycle of
  his seventeen string quartets\, to be performed at intervals throughout
  the event by the Quatuor Danel\, artists-in-residence at the University
 \, and two further concerts of vocal chamber works\, including the song-
 cycle Old Letters\, the Sonata for Solo Double Bass and the Piano Sonata

  residence\, the Quatuor Danel\, will be performing in a series of conce
 rts which form the Weinberg Quartet Cycle\, 24-27 January 2019. The Quat
 uor Danel’s performances in January mark a repeat of their historic firs
 t-ever cycle of 17 of Weinberg’s Quartets\, first performed at the Centr
