Manchester Architecture Research Centre (MARC) 2014 Spring Seminar Series – MARC talks!

The MARC 2014 Spring Seminar Series features the architecture and/or city related work of colleagues from across the University of Manchester. It offers an opportunity for cross-disciplinary discussion and exchange between faculty and PhD researchers. Talks take place on Wednesdays, 12.30-2.00pm, and lunch will be provided.

The first in the series will be Retrofitted Cities: Transforming Buildings From Within

"This presentation represents a synopsis of the key arguments made in my forthcoming monograph with the same title (IB Tauris, 2014). The book focuses on the different ways in which households transform the grain of the city over time, by modifying the physical structure, social meaning and economic function of residential dwellings in line with changing needs. The presentation, therefore, highlights the creative practices and alternative economic relations associated with transformations of the domestic built environment, while exploring the multiple mechanisms through which everyday interventions in the structure of the home weave the wider urban fabric in social, cultural, economic and architectural terms. While primarily based on empirical work in Central Europe, these explorations are placed within the context of wider debates on urban retrofit, inequality and resilience at a global scale." Professor Stefan Bouzarovski, The University of Manchester

Stefan Bouzarovski is a Professor of Geography at The University of Manchester‘s School of Environment, Education and Development, and Director of the Centre for Urban Resilience and Energy. His work spans a wide range of disciplinary domains – from the urban geographies of inner-city transformation to the political ecologies of energy. Among other activities, Stefan currently co-ordinates the Energy Vulnerability and Urban Transitions in Europe initiative.
