DESCRIPTION:Join us for this PSI seminar with guest speaker Dr Greg A. Mu
 tch. Chemical separation processes account for 10 – 15% of global energy
  consumption and 40 – 90% of capital and operating costs in industry. Ho
 wever\, their importance is often overlooked and underappreciated. Carbo
 n dioxide capture is a prime example\; separation from point sources and
  from air is needed to limit global warming to less than 1.5C\, yet cont
 emporary technologies have seen limited deployment due to substantial en
 ergy penalties and significant materials demands. In this talk\, first t
 he importance of chemical separation processes to our everyday lives wil
 l be discussed\, in the context of the “Periodic Table of Chemical Separ
 ations”. Second\, the state-of-the-art in carbon dioxide capture will be
  presented\, including technologies proposed to separate carbon dioxide 
 directly from air. Finally\, work from my group on carbon dioxide captur
 e and reaction engineering using solid sorbents and molten-carbonate mem
 branes will be presented. The importance of close collaboration between 
 scientists working with cutting-edge characterisation techniques and eng
 ineers developing new processes will be shown to be key for developing n
 ext-generation carbon dioxide capture processes. \n\n\n\n
