DESCRIPTION:Prof. John Copas\, University of Warwick\n\nTitle: Meta analy
sis and the curse of publication bias\n\nAbstract:\nPublication bias is
a major threat to the validity of the meta analysis of literature review
 s. A common conjecture is that research studies reporting a significant
result are more likely to be selected for review than studies whose resu
lts are inconclusive. It is impossible to correct for publication bias b
ut\, at least under this conjecture\, we can assess how sensitively revi
ew results are likely to depend on different degrees of selection. We wi
ll look at examples taken from different areas of the social and medical
sciences.\n\n\nTea/coffee and cakes from 2.45.\n\nAll welcome. No regi
stration necessary.\n\nThe Cathie Marsh Institute (CMI) provides a focal
point at The University of Manchester for the application of quantitati
ve methods in interdisciplinary social science research in order to gene
rate a world class research environment.\n
