Study Of High-Speed Aerodynamics: High-Fidelity Simulation, Turbulence Modeling and Flow Control
Abstract of the lecture:
The development of hypersonic vehicles is currently a prominent area of interest in the aviation field. However, two critical problems are hindering its progress: insufficient knowledge and understanding of some key high-speed flow phenomena, such as shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions (SWTBLIs), and uncertainty in turbulence models for high-speed flows. This talk aims to present recent progress in analysing high-speed flow through the use of high- fidelity simulations. We developed a set of high-order numerical schemes and the ASTR code, by using which we conducted a series of direct-numerical/large-eddy simulations of SWTBLIs. The analysis of the DNS/LES data has led to the discovery of new flow structures, and flow mechanisms were proposed to explain them. Furthermore, with a deeper understanding of the flow dynamics, we improved turbulence models for high-speed flows. These models showed better performance in SWTBLIs and have been adopted in wider applications. We also studied the control of SWTBLIs using convergence-divergence riblets through high-fidelity simulations and confirmed their positive impact on flow separation.
